The story of a clinical trial
A documentary on the pioneering clinical trial led by Dr. Oriol Mitjà at the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital in Badalona
Following the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent health crisis in most of the world, epidemiologists and virologists are working tirelessly to gather information on the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Dr. Oriol Mitjà, a specialist in infectious diseases, is undertaking a clinical trial to assess the use of the drug hydroxychloroquine on those who have come into contact with COVID-19 positive patients.
This documentary has gained exclusive access to the clinical trial team as they gather data and explore their findings.
Does hydroxychloroquine prevent the disease from developing in those who have been in contact with COVID-19 positive patients? Although the results have not been published yet, the trial has involved 100 clinical and non-clinical volunteers to find the subjects. Since the beginning of the trial, they have recruited 3,000 people who have been in contact COVID-19 positive patients. The trial was funded by a crowdfunding page called “Jo em corono”, which raised over one million euros in 24 hours. This pandemic is embittering life and killing our elderly. If hydroxychloroquine works, it will mean that instead of infecting 20% of the family of a positive patient, only 5% will get the disease. This could have a huge global impact.
``The whole world is hoping to find something which stops the spread of the virus to your family and loved ones.``
As well as researching their findings, this documentary follows the team’s turbulent journey as they work to battle coronavirus. Facing worldwide social pressure to generate positive findings, they try to deal with their own emotions and responsibilities. Because ultimately, they are working against the clock.
